Lieven J. R. Pauwels is Professor of Criminology at the Department of Criminology, Criminal Law and Social Law at Ghent University and Director of IRCP since June 2015. He received his PhD in Criminology from Ghent University in 2006. His dissertation dealt with the topic of  neighbourhood contextual effects on adolescent offending: a test of social disorganisation theory. He is the 2009 winner of the Willem Nagel Award, a tri-annual Dutch Award for the best PhD study written by a Dutch or Flemish scholar published between 2006-2008. He is interested in crime causation theories, unifying frameworks and empirical tests,  philosophy of causation and innovative methods in quantitative criminology. Some of his studies have been published in Criminology, Crime & Delinquency, Criminal Justice & Behavior, European Journal of Criminology, Justice Quarterly, …

He teaches courses on the etiology of crime, quantitative methods, statistics and crime prevention. He works closely together with NSCR (The SPAN-project together with Prof. Dr G. J.N. Bruinsma, Dr. F.M. Weerman and Prof.Dr. W. Bernasco - The Netherlands), Malmö University (prof. Dr. Robert Svensson and prof. Dr. Marie Torstensson-Levander) and is affiliated researcher at the PADS+ study (Prof. P.O. Wikström-Cambridge University).
