Sofie Van Roeyen studied at Ghent University and holds a Master of Science in Criminological Sciences (2013 - Magna Cum Laude). As part of her studies, she did an internship at the prison of Ghent ('Nieuwewandeling'), where she conducted research about suicide prevention. In concrete terms, she did a qualitative evaluation of the reporting centre for suicide prevention, launched at Ghent’s prison, where inmates are registered when there is a suspicion of suicidal thoughts. Sofie’s master thesis concerned the decision making process of investigating judges in the context of pretrial detention. In 2013 and 2014 Sofie contributed to the offtake and coding of the Flemish surveys of the third International Self-Report of Delinquency (ISRD), at research group SVA, Ghent University. Since February 2014, Sofie is a member of IRCP and is preparing a doctoral thesis on desistance in mentally ill offenders.
